General information about test results
If your results are normal we would not contact you, although you are welcome to contact us if you want to check. If the result has been received the receptionist will usually be able to give you the results over the phone.
Should the doctor need to see you, the receptionist will book an appointment in accordance with the doctor’s instructions. Usually the first available routine appointment is offered but in cases of urgency a same day or next day appointment is arranged.
For a variety of reasons a test may need to be repeated or medication may be prescribed and often the practice nurse will speak to you about this.
The results of tests carried out during hospital visits are not normally sent to the practice.
Results of smear tests
Normal smears are recalled every 3 years or if you have abnormal smears it may be more frequently. Sometimes a smear is inadequate and you will be called by the surgery to have it repeated. If there are any problems with your smear that needs referral to a gynaecologist the surgery will contact you to see a doctor in the surgery. Smear results can take a few weeks to come back from the cytology department, you should also receive a copy of the result in the post.
Confidentiality
Results for patients over 16 years can only be given to the patient.
As per our practice policy to ensure patient confidentiality, the staff will not disclose any details of the test but will advise you of any action that needs to be taken.
Results can be given to someone other than the patient if previously arranged with the doctor.
